Portraits of Hope has just received official approval to pursue an unprecedented public art and civic initiative that will involve more than 12,000 children and adults in an amazing visual makeover of The Los Angeles Convention Center outer facades including the prominent curved 1,200 linear foot wall which will visually transform the downtown cityscape. This is where the 10 and 110 freeways merge and 650,000 vehicles go by every day.
The downtown project will culminate in the installation and exhibition of a one-of-a-kind visual artwork that will be up for for a minimum of 6 months with the final exhibit time frame to be determined by Dept of Convention and Tourism. Elements of the Convention Center that have been approved for the project include the very prominent outer curved wall, the 200,000 sq ft rooftop next to Staples Center, LA Live, and the pedestrian thoroughfares between Staples Center and the Convention Center.
Traditional to POH projects, many schools, hospitals, social service and community groups will participate and the project will incorporate POH’s integrated themes of public art, civic studies education, community engagement, creative therapy, and teamwork. The five-to-six month programmatic phase will precede the installation.
We are hitting the ground running, so this is the time to get involved. As in all Portraits of Hope civic projects, this initiative will be privately funded through corporate partnerships, foundation partners and individuals who want to play a key role in what promises to be a terrific project and who can move quickly! This is a great opportunity for companies, foundations, and individuals to be part of a major urban project in the pulse of Los Angeles.

This new Portraits of Hope public art and civic initiative is a continuation of the program’s large-scale, national projects which have visually transformed and brightened public settings and symbols ranging from the NYC taxi fleet, blimps, planes, buildings, and laundromats to LA’s coastal lifeguard towers, race cars, bodies of water, animal shelters, and frontline fire and rescue vehicles by working with organizations from NASA to NASCAR.
Stay tuned for another future announcement and more POH project ideas and updates.
