Utility Box Art Program

Art adds unique color to our streets and beautifies our communities. That’s why I announced my Utility Box Art Program in November 2017 to improve our neighborhoods while supporting local artists. This program sponsors local artists up to $250 in discretionary funding to turn blank utility boxes into stunning works of public art.

Interested artists can apply for the grant by submitting their design to cd4.art@lacity.org after reviewing the full program requirements document here. Designs must be community appropriate, and are encouraged in commercial zones. Any utility boxes in residential zones will need approval from the local neighborhood council first. More guidelines from the Department of Transportation can be found here.

If you want to see the works for yourself, check out the interactive map below.

Resiliency IN A BOX is a mural covered repurposed shipping container housing equipment producing a renewable, sustainable source of potable water, soil enhancements and clean energy on a daily basis. Our project provides opportunities for STEM education and a canvas for public art. In the Community Healing Gardens'Tech Garden at LAUSD Edwin Markham Middle School in Watts, it will improve food production plus serve as an off-the-grid, vital resource for the entire neighborhood in the event of a disaster.
