Disappointing catch for LA River fish study

October 5, 2014 – Saturday's biologist fishing trip to a section of the L.A. River in Long Beach came away with a disappointing haul: just a couple anchovies and carp to help assess the size of the area's fish population and the health of the river.

Friends of the L.A. River has been catching, weighing, measuring, and collecting tissue samples from fish along the river for several months ahead of some of the area's revitalization efforts, spokesman William Bowling said.

"Twenty years from now we'll be able to say, 'O.K. Look, before the concrete was removed, we found these types of fish, and they were this healthy,'" Bowling said. "We're just kinda establishing a baseline. With all the restoration work that's going on we want to see the differences."
